What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw used to support one or more false teeth. Dental implants replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root, the dental implant(s) preserves the jawbone. A crown or bridge will be used to restore the implants.

Are dental implants safe, and how long do they last?

Implants are a well-established treatment and are safe, implants, much like natural teeth, will last for as long as you care for them with regular maintenance visits.

Can implants replace missing teeth?

Yes, implants can replace one missing tooth to several missing teeth  without affecting the adjacent teeth. Implants can also be used to replace all teeth (same day teeth) that have been lost or extracted years before.

Bridge              \"Dental

What is a dental bridge?

Bridges are fixed prosthetic devices that are cemented onto existing teeth by a dentist. Bridges are commonly used to cover a space if you’re missing one or more teeth. They are cemented to natural teeth or implants surrounding the space where the natural tooth is missing.

Are dental bridges safe, and how long do they last?

Dental bridges are safe, but the adjacent teeth need preparing to be able to place the crown with the attached tooth to fill the gap. Preparation involves re-contouring these teeth by removing a portion of enamel to allow room for a crown to be placed over them. By re-contouring the adjacent teeth, may result in the tooth to become sensitive or for the tooth needing a root filling. Bridges can last up to 10 years on average.

Whenever a tooth is lost or extracted a considerable amount of the bone that once surrounded the remaining root may disappear. This loss can be particularly rapid during the first few months and is described as ‘bone resorption’. It will always occur to some extent, unless specific care is taken to reduce its effects.
